Most Back Pain Cases Are Due To Muscular Strains

“I’m sending her over to you for some ice and electrical stim”, the doctor said over the phone. This was getting to be a more frequent “request” that he was making of me in the last couple of months.

While some of the patients with back pain were sent straight to the hospital, the majority were seen right there in the clinic for the ice and muscle stimulation. This is the treatment of choice for patients that came in with severe muscular strains. And muscular strains were by and large the cause of most of our cases.

This Girl Couldn’t Even Walk

I had seen this particular woman basically being carried in by two co-workers of hers. By the look on her face, she was in excruciating pain and the doctor took her right in and started working with her.

It took him a little longer than usual to process her history and physical. Probably because she was in no condition to answer too many questions. After about 30 minutes she was brought over to the physical therapy clinic in a wheelchair.

A whispered conversation with the doc gave me the assurance that the woman was suffering from severe muscle strains and nothing more serious. X-rays revealed normal disc heights, no fractures or potential displacements of her bones. Everything looked normal.

The doc needed to complete his evaluation but couldn’t because she wasn’t able to focus on that at the moment. The only thing in her mind was the pain.

“I want you to do your thing with her”, the doc said, hoping that I would be able to get past the woman’s pain. I gave him a look of incredulity.

After getting her to lay on some ice and the muscle stimulator she rested for about 20 minutes or so. When it came time for her to get up, she let out an ear piercing scream and began to cry again.

All Back Pain Is Not A Mystery

Her pain was obvious. But, what was causing it I wondered. So, after she was laying down again, I began to ask her which specific movements caused the most pain? Which specific movements caused the least pain? Where was most of her pain located? Where did her pain stop?

After she answered all of these questions and more, I was able to explain to her exactly where her problems were coming from. I challenged her to put it to the test.

She took me up on it. By following my specific directions, this woman was able to sit up from a lying position. Then she was able to stand up, move around and start walking with a significant reduction in her back pain.

After walking around the physical therapy clinic with a smile on her face, she walked back over to see the doctor to complete her check up.

Later that day, I got a phone call from the doc…”All right…You’ve got to tell me how you did that…” And, I said, “Doc, it’s magic…”

Sciatica pain that occurs during pregnancy is a cause for concern. All the same, the pain usually goes away by itself. Certain theorists claim that the psoas or gluteus muscles can lead to sciatic pain, especially when they are too tight. Massage therapy can help this condition by reducing the tightness of the muscles. In fact, many women claim that they find massage therapy to be relieving when they suffer from sciatica. This is because massages aid in relieving any tightness in the muscles, and thus, sciatica symptoms.

It is essential to consult with a doctor if one develops sciatica while she is pregnant. The doctor may recommend treatment options that are in line with the patient’s needs, such as allergies and former pain. Applying heat and correcting posture, in combination with rest are the most prescribed treatment options for pregnant patients with sciatica.
